HUNTINGTON, West Virginia — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to the Winthrop University Eagles and the Marshall University Thundering Herd on the second day of the Marshall Round Robin on Friday (March 4). Winthrop was victorious 9-1 in five innings, while the game with Marshall ended 4-0.
In the game versus Winthrop, the Hawks were behind 2-0 as the game went into the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Julia Garcia cut that lead in half with one swing of the bat as she crushed a homer over the center field fence.
However, in the bottom half of the inning the Eagles scored six runs to go up 8-1. One inning later, Winthrop was able to score a run via a bases loaded walk to end the contest after five innings played.
Garcia went 2-2 in the game, while the team's other hit came from freshman Nola Mountain. Mountain also stole a base against WU.
The game versus Marshall saw both pitchers throw a complete game. Graduate student Nasya Goodman was the pitcher for the Hawks and North Carolina State transfer Sydney Nester was inside the circle for the Thundering Herd.
With both pitchers bringing their A game, one team's offense needed to break through and it was Marshall that got it done by scoring one run in the third and fourth inning. They added two insurance runs in the sixth inning to go up 4-0.
Eastern Shore had just three hits in the ballgame and they came from Garcia in the first inning, junior Tyanna Roberts in the second and sophomore Tatum Kresley in the sixth inning. Kresley also had a stolen base in the game.
The squad will be back on the diamond tomorrow (March 5) as they take on Marshall once again at 1 p.m. They will follow that matchup with a game against Purdue Fort Wayne.
