Bears Pitching Downs the Hawks on Saturday

Series Finale Tomorrow At Noon with Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Maryland — On Saturday (April 15), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell victim to the conference's top pitching staff as the Morgan State University Bears defeated the Hawks in both games of the two teams' doubleheader.

The score of game one was 6-0 and game two ended with a 5-1 score. MSU's two wins on Saturday put them in first place and one game ahead of the Hawks (14-26, 10-4 MEAC) in the conference standings.

In game one, sophomore Tatum Kresley singled to left field to begin the game. She stole second and advanced to third, but did not score. One inning later, graduate student Nasya Goodman singled to left center and was stranded on first. That would be the only hits of the game for Eastern Shore.

Morgan State's Anaya Hunte was in control inside the circle in game one. She threw a perfect game on April 13 in her last outing and struck out six Hawk batters with zero walks on Saturday.

The second game was a pitcher's duel until late in the contest. Sophomore Ameenah Ballenger was perfect through 3.1 innings before allowing a base runner. She would not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Eastern Shore got their lone run of the game in the fifth. Freshman Rebecca Miller singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. Sophomore Ah-Nayia Oglesby then hit a triple to right field to bring Miller in to score and the Hawks led 1-0.

The Shore held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth. The Bears got six hits that led to five runs in the frame to take a 5-1 advantage. The home team would face only three batters from Eastern Shore in the seventh as they used a 643 double play to end the game.

Miller, Oglesby, Goodman and sophomore Julia Garcia accounted for the team's hits in game two. Ballenger pitched a total of 5.1 innings in the contest in her first game back from injury.

Maryland Eastern Shore and Morgan State will conclude their series tomorrow (April 16) with a single game at noon.
