Hawks Hounded by Retrievers in Home Finale

Strong Second Inning Not Enough for Unanswered UMBC Runs

SALISBURY, Maryland – It looked to be the opposite of the last meeting between Maryland Eastern Shore and the University of Maryland – Baltimore County, with the Hawks (16-32, 15-15 MEAC) having a three-run lead in the second inning. Seven unanswered runs by the Retrievers (19-27, 8-16 AEC) would be the difference maker, sinking the Hawks 8-4 in the final home game of the season at Henry S. Parker Field in Salisbury.

Starter Alec Greenblatt got an easy groundout to begin the first inning but would walk four straight Retrievers to give the visitors an early lead.

In the bottom of the second the Hawks struck back, putting two runners on following a Brantley Cutler hit by pitch and a long Alex McCoy single to left center. Freshman Kyle Cincinnati extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single through the left side to drive in Cutler.

With two on, outfielder Bryan Widdowson found a grove and knocked the first home run of his collegiate career, putting the Hawks ahead 4-1.

The Retrievers got a run back in the top of the third, hitting a home run themselves to cut the Hawk lead in half. In the top of the next inning, the Retrievers hit another home run, this time of the two-run variety when they drew a leadoff walk, tying the game at four-all.

Another solo shot by the Retrievers would prove to be the dagger against the Hawks, when Micahel Cilio led the inning off with a ball over the fence to make it a 5-4 game in favor of the visitors.

An unearned run was scored by the Retrievers when with runners on the corners a passed ball got by Cincinnati, putting the runner on third across the plate but the Hawks got out of the inning when the runner on first attempted to reach third but was thrown out. Another two unearned runs were scored in the eighth due to a pair of errors would get Retrievers across the plate.

The Hawks are back in action quickly, with a doubleheader against Delaware State starting at 1 p.m. on Thursday (May 12), with games being shuffled due to expected inclement weather.
