DOVER, Delaware – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team didn't end the season with a win, falling to Delaware State 21-1 at Bob Reed Field in Dover, Delaware but did finish with the best record since 2016.
The Hawks (16-35, 15-18 MEAC) will now look towards the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, which beings on Thursday (May 19).
Delaware State took the early lead in the first when Trey Paige hit a one out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Krew Bouldin grounded out to second but scored Paige to put the Hornets up.
The Hawks tied it up in the top of the second as
Alex McCoy hit a single up the middle and stole second,
Bryan Widdowson then singled in his at bat to put two on.
Kyle Cincinnati advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and then a sacrifice fly by
Nick Roets scored McCoy from third.
Ethan Edelson came in to relieve Jordan Haddaway in the inning and shut down the Hawks for the rest of the game, striking out seven and allowing just two hits.
Everything came crashing down for the Hawks in the bottom of the second when the Hornets scored six runs in the frame. Delaware State got two runs off a single to third and an error, then a runner was walked in, followed by a Paige single to drive in another and then two more Hornets walked in.
The Hornets would scatter 12 more runs through the game against the Hawks.
