Women drop home contest to Route 13 rival Delaware State

UMES is off until Jan. 21 at South Carolina State

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore suffered a tough 68-60 loss to visiting Delaware State on Saturday (Jan. 14) as the Hornets outshot the Hawks from all areas of the court.

"I told them that at the end of the day I have to accept responsibility," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "Sometimes it gets to where it's not just about putting the ball in the basket. There is some other elephant in the room."

Alexis Moragne led the Hornets with 21 points including 5-of-7 from three and 6-of-6 from the line.

"For us to shoot 32% from the field, 16% from three and 46% from the line you don't give yourself a chance," Batchelor said. "We took 75 shots to their 42. We had 14 turnovers to their 24. We had 17 offensive rebounds to their six. Every area that you could look at other than the scoreboard and shooting percentage, we had better numbers."

Delaware State (3-11, 1-2 MEAC) shot 47% from the field (20-of-42), 46% from behind the arc (7-of-15) and 91% from the free throw line (21-of-23).

"To be honest they'll beat most teams this year if they play like that," Batchelor said. "I thought they played well. That's the other thing that we don't do a good enough job of sometimes — we have to realize we are playing against somebody and their ability to be able to play the way they did led to the end result. I take my hat off to coach Hill."

Ja'la Bannerman (Baltimore, Maryland) led the Hawks with 14 points, but was 5-of-17 from the field. Mahogany Lester (Virginia Beach, Virginia) had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, but played just 14 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Hawks (4-13, 0-3 MEAC) will be off until Jan. 21 when they travel to South Carolina State as part of a road trip that will take them to N.C. Central (Jan. 23) in the same swing.

"We need to figure it out," Batchelor said. "The only thing we can do is keep working."
