Hawks Fall to Norfolk State in MEAC opener

UMES hosts Howard University on Monday

NORFOLK, Virginia — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team dropped its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener against Norfolk State by a final of 57-46 at Joseph G. Echols Hall.

After falling behind 18-5 out of the gate, the Hawks snapped off a commanding 13-0 run spanning nearly six minutes of game time. Da'Shawn Phillip was the catalyst of the run, scoring 7 of the 13 Hawk points, while the Hawk defense forced three Spartan turnovers in the span.

The beginning of the second period saw a similar story as the first, with Norfolk beginning the half on a 14-4 run. The Hawks pushed the margin within single digits, but failed to find the late offensive surge they needed.

"Extremely displeased with our shot selection and overall offensive execution," head coach Jason Crafton said. "On the other end of the floor, we did an incredible job of forcing turnovers and taking them out of their offense."

As a team, the Hawks recorded 11 steals on the way to forcing 21 Spartan turnovers.

Troy Hupstead led UMES with 10 points on the evening while fighting for four rebounds. Kevon Voyles and Phillip finished just behind with nine points each.

Voyles made three three-pointers and corralled five boards, while Phillip cleaned the glass three times with one assist.

Nathaniel Pollard Jr. matched Voyles' five rebounds while scoring five and tallying two assists. Ahamadou Fofana led UMES with four pickpockets and totaled three rebounds.

The team faces a quick turnaround, with Howard University making the trip to Princess Anne for a Monday evening matchup. Sitting at 8-9 on the season, the Bison opened their MEAC season with an 84-64 victory over Delaware State on Saturday.

"We will need to tighten some things up quickly as we have a quick turnaround," Crafton said.

Monday evening's contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Hytche.
