Hawks Bested by Hosting Spartans

UMES faces George Mason, S.C. State in Sunday slate

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell to Spartan Classic host University of South Carolina Upstate in five innings on Saturday evening, 11-0.

The Spartans jumped ahead early and did not look back, plating three in the bottom of the first. Upstate added two more in the second before putting up six in the fourth to trigger the eventual run-rule.

Four Hawks reached base in the loss, including Jaycee Holt, who found her way to first twice on Saturday with a walk and a base-knock. Holt has begun her freshman campaign with three hits in her first five career at-bats.

Nola Mountain, McKenzie Abiley and Ah-Nayia Oglesby were the other three Hawks to log hits in the contest.

Upstate's Maddie Drerup (3-0) earned the win, tossing four innings of three-hit ball with one walk and one strikeout. Katelyn Smitchko (0-1) was tacked with the loss, allowing nine runs over her three innings of work.

The Hawks get an early start on Sunday, facing George Mason at 10 a.m. Later in the day, the team will face familiar Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe South Carolina State in a non-conference showdown slated for 2 p.m.
