UMES goes 3-1 on Day 1 at second MEAC meet, despite tough day

Hawks will look to improve pinfall on Sunday

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore didn't have its best day on the lanes on Saturday at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference No. 2 meet of the season, but still managed to come out of the day with a 3-1 record and in second place in overall pinfall.

"We didn't bowl as well as we are capable of," Hawks coach Roger Petrin said. "We missed out on some opportunities and some pins. I thought the last two sets we bowled pretty well, we just couldn't get more than nine."

The Hawks picked up wins against Howard (1002-771), Coppin State (903-802) and Morgan State (954-857), but fell in the final match of the day to Norfolk State 965-937.

"Tomorrow, we need to go in and make some ball surface adjustments and hope we can help blend out the issues that we are seeing," Petrin said. "We have to make spares. Our spare shooting wasn't as good as we typically do. Those are the things that we can control and those are the adjustments we'll make heading into tomorrow."

Senior Brooke Roberts (Port Orange, Florida) averaged 215.8 in the five games — including the bye. She had high games of 246 and 241 against Howard and Morgan State respectively.
