Coppin halts Hawks win streak at three

UMES returns home for senior night Monday

BALTIMORE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore entered the fourth quarter of Saturday's (Feb. 25) contest at Coppin State trailing just 36-35. But the Hawks found the rims even more unkind in the final period as they shot 14% (2-of-14) from the field, 55% (6-of-11) from the free throw line and were outscored 20-10 in a 56-45 loss.

"It was kind of the whole game where we had trouble scoring," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "I mean we scored 10, 15, 10 and 10. That was really the difference in the game, just not being able to score consistently."

Shorthanded Coppin State (7-20, 4-8 MEAC) pushed the action on the interior form the start. Point in the paint finished an even 22-22, but the Eagles had a 55-38 advantage on the glass.

"They doubled us up in offensive rebounds (14-7)," Batchelor said. "I thought they rebounded really well and we did not get to the offensive glass."

Junior Zamara Haynes (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) led the Hawks in scoring with 18 points on 7-of-20 shooting and a team-high six rebounds. No other UMES players reached double digits, while the Hawks turned it over 11 times and had just two assists.

The Hawks will return home for a senior night battle with Morgan State starting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday  (Feb. 27).

"We have to get back to doing the things that can help us be successful," Batchelor said. "I don't think we ever got into a rhythm offensively, but we also didn't get any second-chance opportunities. I thought they were the hungrier team. And with Morgan coming in here on our senior day, they should be either hungrier themselves or really struggling because they just lost their third straight.

"We have to be hungry."
