SALISBURY, Maryland — There was a strong effort put forth by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team against visiting Central Connecticut State University, a nine-run eighth inning by the Blue Devils (3-3, 1-0 NEC) would inevitably sink the Hawks (1-12, 0-1 NEC) 10-2 on Friday, March 10 at the Henry S. Parker Athletic Center.
Noah Covington took to the mound for the Hawks and was tagged for the loss in his fourth start of the season, although the senior threw with five strikeouts to no walks – he has yet to give up a free pass this season – while facing just the minimum through three.
The Blue Devils were able to strike in the fourth inning following a throwing error to place a CCSU runner on first, who advanced on a fly ball to second and scored on a ripper down the third baseline. Kyle Cincinnati would get the Hawks out of the inning by throwing out a runner at second, his fifth of the year – he's currently thrown out 45% of runners on the season.
In the bottom of the sixth the Hawks were able to tie the game up in the usual fashion of manufacturing a run with Derrick Mayes II on base following a walk. Sacrifice bunt specialist Riley Horner did what he does best to move Mayes up to second and he was driven in by Brantley Cutler's team leading 11th RBI of the season, this one a single up the middle.
The wheels fell off for the Hawks pitching staff in the top of the eighth inning as CCSU batted around and knocked in eight runs to make the tie game a 9-1 deficit for the home side. It was both patience and well-placed hits for the Blue Devils in the frame, as UMES issued three walks and allowed four doubles.
Alex McCoy got things started for UMES with a single in the bottom of the ninth inning and promptly stole second – his fifth of the season – then was moved along by Brian Cordell and Doyle McNew outs for the Hawks second run of the afternoon. Nothing else would come at the plate, sealing the 10-2 loss for UMES.
Cutler led the way for the Hawks, going 3-3 with a walk and an RBI, McCoy was 1-4 with a stolen base and a run.
Another shot at the Blue Devils and the first Northeast Conference victory in Hawks history comes tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
