NORFOLK, Virginia — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team saw their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament run come to an end in the semifinals, losing to Howard University by a 74-55 final.
The Hawks currently stand at 18-13 overall, marking just the second time since the 1973-74 season the program recorded 18 wins.
UMES held their own in a gritty, defensive first half that saw just 48 total points scored. The Hawk defense upheld its reputation as one of the most disruptive in the country by grabbing 13 steals and forcing 20 turnovers, but Howard made shots down the stretch to keep them at bay.
Chace Davis and Kevon Voyles tied to lead the Hawks with nine points each. Voyles also grabbed two rebounds and swiped three steals.
Zion Styles spearheaded the defensive effort, nabbing a career-high six steals while scoring seven points, grabbing three boards and blocking a Bison shot. Nathaniel Pollard Jr. added six points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Da'Shawn Phillip scored six with four rebounds and a pair of dimes.
Ahamadou Fofana was the third Hawk to tally six points and added two assists. Troy Hupstead hauled in five rebounds while scoring four points and swiping two possessions. Tuka Nugent grabbed four rebounds and added three points as well.
"We did a great job this season of putting this program in a better place," Hawks coach Jason Crafton said. "We'll see what type of postseason opportunities we might have and go from there."
