Hawk Baseball Shutdown by Manhattan and Lehigh

UMES Gets Second Chance at Both Teams on Sunday

SALISBURY, Maryland – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team ran into some stiff competition against Manhattan College and Lehigh University on Saturday, March 4 – dropping both games at home.

In the first game of the afternoon for the Hawks, UMES kept it tight but fell 4-5 to the Jaspers, and in game two the Mountain Hawks overwhelmed the Hawks for a 2-12 loss.

Game One

The Jaspers were able to get to Hawk starter Noah Covington early in game one, with a leadoff single and a pair of doubles to put Manhattan up by two just three batters in.

Covington was able to get out of the inning and cruise through the second but was dinged up by a solo home run in the top of the third. The Hawks were able to get one back in the fourth with a solo home run of their own by first baseman Alex McCoy.

Manhattan wasn't done with the home runs, knocking a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Hawks were able to battle back late, getting a run in the sixth on a Ryan Howe double to drive in Dillon Oxyer. In the seventh UMES was able to manufacture two more runs thanks to Jasper mistakes – Jason Brown advancing on an error to third and being driven in by a Luke Myers groundout, and the other scored by Derrick Mayes II on a Riley Horner single.

Reliever Blake Rebstock was able to hold the Jaspers at bay in the final two innings, but the offense couldn't tie it up, with just one baserunner between the eighth and ninth innings.

Game Two

The Hawks started game two in a hole thanks to a three-run first inning that included a two-run home run by Lehigh. UMES got two back in the bottom of the frame after being gifted a few wild pitches and passed balls, only to never see the offense get it going the rest of the game.

Lehigh stretched its lead to 8-2 by the end of the third following a grand slam in the second and a solo home run in the next inning.

The Mountain Hawks nabbed four more runs on reliever Brandon Gomez in the fifth and sixth, effectively put the game out of reach for UMES.

Relievers Gary Hallmen Jr. and Tyler Prather put together 3.2 innings of scoreless ball out of the pen for the Hawks.

Next Up

The Hawks get a chance at revenge on Sunday (March 5), taking on Lehigh at 2:00 p.m. and Manhattan in the nightcap at 5:00 p.m. in Salisbury.
