Long Ball Hurts Hawks in Loss to Mount

UMES With One More Shot Against Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday

EMMITSBURG, Maryland – Scattered runs weren't enough for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team against Mount St. Mary's (MD) on Saturday, April 22 at E.T. Straw Family Stadium, falling 4-6 to the Mountaineers.

The Hawks have one more shot at taking out the Mount after four season losses, with the getaway game coming on Sunday (April 23) in Western Maryland.

"It's two good games, I'm not disappointed in our effort," interim head coach Shawn Phillips said. "I'm disappointed to lose – but I'm not disappointed in our effort or how we're playing the game."

Noah Covington took the mound for the Hawks and rolled through the first inning of work before being tagged with a solo shot to left in the second.

With a two-out walk and a steal, Brian Cordell would reach second and be in scoring position for the Hawks top hitter, Brantley Cutler, to come to bat. Cutler would knock a single through the hole at second, tying the game up at 1-1 when Cordell crossed the plate.

In the bottom of the fourth the Mount was able to string together a pair of singles with runners on, moving out to a two-run lead. An error at third by the Hawks put up one more run for the home side.

Battling back in the top of the fifth, Cordell reached on his second walk of the day and made his way to second on a wild pitch. Once again, Cutler came through with a double to left center to drive in his fellow graduate student.

The Hawks kept churning in the top of the sixth to tie the game up at four-all. Carter Rieben, with his first collegiate start at third base since his sophomore year in high school, drew a one-out walk to get the offense started. Rearing back, Cordell would slap his second home run of the season to center to drive in two to lock things up.

"Cordell is producing at the top of the lineup, that's definitely what we need at the top of the lineup right now," Phillips said. "He's seeing the ball well, hit another home run there to tie it up, he's doing what he needs to do at the top."

A pair of back-to-back jacks by the Mountaineers in the bottom of the sixth would be the difference maker, giving Covington the loss despite a solid day with five strikeouts to one intentional walk.

Cordell led the squad with three runs on the day, grabbing a hit and two walks against the Mountaineers, as well as tacking on two RBIs. Cutler had two RBIs himself to go with his three hits.

Catcher Kyle Cincinnati threw out his 16th runner of the season, the Hawks middle infield also turned their 41st double play of the season.

Sunday (April 23) is the last shot for the Hawks to grab a win during the five-game season series with Mount St. Mary's (MD). First pitch comes at 1:00 p.m. in Emmitsburg, a live stream and Live Stats will be provided by Mount St. Mary's (MD), as well as updates on Twitter via @ESHawksBase.
