EASTON, Massachusetts – It was a series to forget for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team as the Hawks return to Maryland with three losses at Stonehill College, culminating in a 2-13 loss on Sunday, May 14.
The loss keeps the Hawks in seventh place of the Northeast Conference standings, sitting a game and a half out of the sixth and final playoff position currently held by Merrimack College with just one NEC series remaining against Delaware State. The Warriors defeated Fairleigh Dickinson with a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon.
Stonehill jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning on a pair of unearned runs against starter
Evan Nibblett. The Skyhawks rattled off five more runs in the fourth inning, putting UMES down by seven.
A one-run single and a three-run double extended the Skyhawk lead to 0-11 heading into the top of the sixth following a brief delay due a turkey in left field.
Held scoreless so far, the Hawks were able to get runners on the corners with a
Derrick Mayes II walk and
Brian Cordell hitting into a fielder's choice that turned into an error.
Dillon Oxyer smacked a high fly ball to right as a sacrifice, driving in Mayes for a run.
The Hawk bullpen was a bit wild in the bottom of the sixth, allowing a run on a bases loaded wild pitch and then a sacrifice fly for the Skyhawks twelfth and thirteenth runs of the game.
After being no hit through seven innings,
Kyle Cincinnati would break up the pitching performance with a single up the middle.
Luke Myers drew a walk in the inning and
Anders Brown legged out an infield single to third, but the trio would be left stranded on the bases to end the inning.
A second run was scored by the Hawks in the eighth when
Brantley Cutler singled and was moved over to second on a
Doyle McNew walk. On a pinch-hit single,
Marcus Brown delivered a run for the Hawks as Cutler crossed the plate.
Raymond Smith and
Tyler Prather both turned in scoreless appearances for the Hawks, Nibblett was tagged with the loss with seven runs against but just three earned.
The final midweek of the season awaits the Hawks on Tuesday, May 16 as George Mason visits at 3:00 p.m. in a non-conference meeting. The Hawks will wrap up the season with a three-game NEC set against Delaware State starting on Thursday, May 18 at home.
