DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's golf team concluded the 2022-23 season with an eighth place finish at the Northeast Conference Championship on Tuesday, May 2.
The team finished with a score of 944 (+80). The Hawks shaved off 16 strokes from the first to second round and saw a 17-stroke improvement on Tuesday.
"We got progressively better as the week went on," Hawks coach Tiana Jones said. "The first round was pretty brutal on the guys, facing 45 mile per hour winds … Round two and round three were a lot calmer, and they were definitely more in their element."
Logan Kiley led the Hawk five, finishing tied for 29th in the three-round event. Kiley shot an 18-over to earn a 234 with a low score of 76 in the second round.
Michael Davis finished 33rd on the leaderboard. Davis bounced back after an 87-stroke first round to post a 239 (+23) at the event.
Thabang Moephuli played a strong third round to finish in a tie for 34th. Moephuli needed just 72 strokes on Tuesday, cutting his score to 240 (+24).
Like Moephuli, E Brooks also made a big jump in the tournament's final day. Brooks shot a 71 in Tuesday's round to bring his score to 241 (+25) at the tournament.
Mike Weller also finished inside the top 40, taking 39th with a score of 246 (+30) and seeing a 10 stroke improvement from the first to final rounds.
"Today, the guys really fought back and came in with what I know they're capable of doing and what they know they're capable of doing," Jones said. "We took a lot of things from this year's tournament and we'll know what to bring to the table next year well before we get here."
