Villanova Attack Sinks Hawks in Three Sets

UMES Heads to American University on Friday for Three Match Weekend

VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania – Strong fight was shown by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team at Villanova University on Wednesday, August 30. Quick hits kept the Hawks alive, but the Wildcats would prevail in three sets by scores of 14-25, 14-25 and 23-25.

"We showed more fight than I think people believed we had in us," Faircloth said. "Looking at what we did tonight, especially in the third set, there's a ton of promise with this team."

Villanova was able to take an early lead on the Hawks in the first and would hold on throughout the set. Nkemjika Ikemefuna had back-to-back kills to cut the Wildcats lead to five but it wouldn't be enough with UMES dropping 14-25.

The Hawks and Wildcats traded blows in the second set until Villanova went on two three-point runs to stretch the lead before closing it out on six straight for another 14-25 loss for UMES.

It was a hot start for UMES in the third set, doubling up on the Wildcats 4-2 early before Villanova found its groove to go up by five mid-set. A pair of three-point runs got the Hawks within one as the Wildcats were able to finish it off with a kill to end the match.

"It's a loss, which I'll never like, but the match sets us up well heading to American," Faircloth said.

Ikemefuna led the way on offense for the Hawks with seven kills, also adding an ace from the back line, with Lyric Snowden coming through with six kills herself off the bench. Charlize Williams continues to impress, finishing with a block and five kills at a .500 hitting percentage.

"Lyric was great off the bench and in her chances during the rotation," Faircloth said. "Same with Anisa, she's adjusting to the level quickly."

Quickly learning Division 1 volleyball, Anisa Dorlouis led the team with eight digs and tied Romina Vacca at nine assists.

A quick turnaround is in store for the Hawks, heading to Washington, DC to start the American University Tournament with Marist at noon on Friday (September 1) and American that night at 7:00 p.m., live on ESPN+. UMES will also face off with Central Connecticut State at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
