Hawks Drop Continued Game With Towson

The Short Story:  In a game that was continued from November 21, the Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest at Towson on Wednesday evening in Baltimore. The Tigers used a fourth quarter surge to take a lead and hold on for the 60-55.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a fast start for Towson taking a 7-2 before the Hawks responded with a 7-0 run to take a 9-7 lead. Ja'la Bannerman made a free throw with 26 left in the period to tie the score up at 11-11 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
  • UMES would score eight of the first 10 points of the second period to retake the lead with 5:31 left in the first half, 19-13, with 5:31 remaining. The Tigers responded with a 6-0 run of their own to once again tie the score up at 19-19. After Ashanti Lynch put the Hawks back up 21-19, neither team could score in the final 1:55 of the second quarter as the teams went to the locker room
  • As the teams were in their locker rooms, the decision was made that due to a facility issue the game would be suspended and resumed at a later date.
  • The resumed third quarter saw both teams take multiple leads with UMES leading by as many as five with 2:29 left in the quarter on a three pointer by Zamara Haynes. Towson would slightly chip away, trailing 42-40 going into the fourth.
  • A 10-3 run by the Tigers early in the period saw Towson take a 55-47 lead with 4:36 remaining in the game. The Hawks were unable to cover that quick stretch as the teams traded points with the Tigers holding on for the 60-55 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mahogany Lester led the team with 12 points. Haynes and Ariana Seawell also reached double-figures with 11 points a piece.
  • Lester nearly had a double-double. Along with her 12 points she finished with nine rebounds, including six on the offensive side of the glass.
  • The 64 days between the first and second half of the game is the longest halftime in program history.

  • UMES is back on the court this Saturday, January 27 when it hosts North Carolina Central in MEAC contest. Game time with the Eagles is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Hytche Athletic Center.
