UMES Falls in First MEAC Road Contest of Season

The Short Story:  A cold third quarter allowed Coppin State to stage a comeback as the Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team dropped its second close contest in a row with a 75-69 MEAC loss to the Eagles on Monday evening in Baltimore.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams would trade baskets early with both teams holding small leads with UMES holding a 12-11 lead. A quick 5-0 run by the Hawks and even play saw the visitors take a 19-14 lead into the second quarter.
  • It took nearly two minutes before the first points of the period were scored with a Ja'la Bannerman layup to put UMES 21-14. The Hawks continued to push their lead throughout the quarter to lead by as many as 13 on a Zamara Haynes three at 2:47, 34-21. The Eagles would close out the half cutting the UMES lead down to 11, 37-26.
  • Much like first five minutes of the game, the beginning of the second half saw the Hawks continue to stretch their lead slightly to take a 14 point advantage on an Amira Ofunniyin layup with 5:46 on the clock in the third, 45-31. CSU would close out the quarter on a 16-6 run to cut the lead down to four with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
  • The Hawks would hang onto their lead for the first seven minutes of the final quarter before an Eagles jumper with 2:57 remaining put the home team up 67-65. UMES would tie it at 67-67 before CSU would take the lead and hold on for the 75-69 comeback win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • For the third-straight game, Ariana Seawell scored 16+ points with an 18 point, five rebound performance.
  • Mya Thomas also reached double-figures with 12 points. 
  • The Hawks out rebounded CSU, 40-30, led by Ashanti Lynch's nine and Lainey Allen's eight.
  • UMES also led the Eagles in points off turnovers (24-7), second chance points (23-14), bench points (38-23), and points in the paint (34-24).
  • CSU was led by Angel Jones with 21 points and four rebounds and Laila Lawrence with 19 points and eight rebounds.

UP NEXT

  • The Hawks will have next weekend off before returning on Saturday, January 20 when they travel to Delaware State, who knocked off Morgan State in overtime 73-71 on Monday evening.
  • Game time with the Hornets is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Dover.
