HOW IT HAPPENED

As the University of Maryland Eastern Shore welcomed back alumni and friends for its annual homecoming celebration, the Hawks maintained a two possession lead throughout the majority of the first half. After back-to-back baskets by forward Christopher Flippin and a buzzer beating jumper from Jalen Ware, UMES took a double-digit lead, 37-26, at the half.

UMES maintained a double-digit lead throughout the majority of the second half. With a 71-61 lead at the 6:44 mark, the Hawks seized control as Ralph Martino, Jr. shook a defender for a step back three pointer and Ketron "KC" Shaw flew in for a dunk. Cardell Bailey hit on his next two attempts from beyond the arc to up the lead to 18 with 4:42 to go. A Martino dunk put UMES up by 20 and an alley up dunk on a brotherly connection from Kyrell Shaw to Ketron put the exclamation point on the Hawk homecoming victory.

COMMENTS FROM COACH CLEO HILL, JR.

"For us to be able to deliver a win on homecoming, it means a lot. I loved the fan support tonight and we look forward to giving them more to cheer about as the season goes on. I was happy about our crowd and hope we can get this type of support for every home game."

"We had some former players including members from our 1974-1974 team who came to practice and into the locker room. Our guys took the message from the alumni to heart and really feel like they are part of something bigger."

"I thought KC (Shaw) showed what type of athlete he really can be in front of our home fans. He was ready to perform tonight and had an efficient game from the field."

"With all the new players and coaches this year, we continue to grow and mature as a team. This first slate of games was a busy week and now we turn around and are back on the road to play at Miami-Ohio on Tuesday. We are still learning each other and finding out what everyone likes and how they perform in games. It is a learning process.
