HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening frame, UMES recorded one of their most efficient sets of the season, hitting at a .542 clip. The Hawks normal average for the season is .183. On 24 total attacks, UMES made only two errors offensively. The Maroon and Grey capitalized by generating 15 kills while limiting the Bulldogs to nine en route to a dominant first set victory.
Despite South Carolina State posting more kills than UMES in the 2nd set, the 14 attack errors by the Bulldogs put the Hawks in control of the second set. The Maroon and Grey registered two times as many blocks and double the service aces as the Garnet and Blue. These factors enabled the Hawks to coast to a set two win.
The final set was the most competitive of the three. Each squad finished with 11 kills a piece. With match point for the Hawks, Lilliana Montes and Nkemjika Ikemefuna teamed up to make the game winning block, clinching UMES'Â fifth conference victory of the season
THE NUMBERS
Montes finished with a team-high seven kills and six blocks. This is Montes' fifth match this season with five or more total blocks.
Shanti Ramdeen recorded a team-high and career-high four service aces. Her previous high was three aces against Morgan State on Oct. 25.Â
Anisa Dorlouis posted a team-high 26 assists. Dating back to 2023, this is her 26th consecutive match with double-digit assists.
UMES had twice as many total blocks as South Carolina State, recording eight blocks to the Bulldogs' four.
The Hawks have now won 12 straight against the Bulldogs. UMES' last lost to South Carolina State came in Nov. of 2010 in the MEAC Tournament.Â
UMES has won 10 or more matches in nine of the last 10 seasons.Â
UP NEXT
With this win, the Hawks improve to 10-13 (5-7)) in the 2024 season. In addition, after the loss to Howard in Washington D.C., UMES earned their first win of their four-game road trip. The Maroon and Grey are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 10 in Durham against North Carolina Central. If the Hawks win against the Eagles, UMES will clinch at least a fifth place finish in the MEAC.Â
