Huge First Quarter Leads Hawks Over Morgan State

The Short Story:  In a rescheduled game from this past weekend, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball scored 24 first quarter points enroute to a 58-46 MEAC win over Morgan State on the road in Baltimore on Wednesday evening. Jála Bannerman led all scorers with 14 points

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams started off even as the Hawks had an 8-7 lead with 6:15 showing on the clock. The rest of the period was All UMES as the Hawks went on a 16-1 run to close out the period including a back-to-back threes by Mahogany Lester and one by Bannerman. 
  • Defense was on display in the second quarter as the teams combined for 14 points with the Hawks increasing their lead, heading into the locker room with the 32-14 advantage.
  • The third quarter saw the Bears push back and cut into the Hawks lead. MSU started off on a 9-6 as UMES led 38-23. Over the final 4:24 of the quarter the Bears outscored the Hawks 10-2 to bring the lead down to just seven, 40-33, going into the fourth quarter. 
  • UMES started off the last quarter by pushing their their lead back up to 11 on a Lester layup at 8:03. The Bears answered with an 8-0 run over the next 4:05 to dwindle the Hawk lead down to just three with 3:58 on the clock. Not to be outdone, UMES answered with their own 10-1 run that pushed their lead back up to 12 and left only 20 seconds on the clock. The two squads traded two-points each to close out the game with the Hawks securing the 58-46 win. 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The 12 wins is the most in the first 24 games since the 2018-19 season.
  • The win put the Hawks' record at 12-12 for the season and 4-4 in the MEAC.
  • In addition to Bannerman's 14, Lester also reach double-figures with 12 points.
  • Including Lainey Allen's 14 rebounds, the Hawks finished the game with 57 rebounds to just 32 for MSU.

  • The Hawks are on the road this weekend as they pay a visit to NC Central and South Carolina State. UMES first takes on the Eagles of NCCU on Saturday, February 24 at 2 p.m. before facing the Bulldogs of SCSU on Monday, February 26.
