GAME 1
The Short Story:Â The UMES softball team hosted their home opener on Thursday afternoon as the visiting Saint Peter's Peacocks paid a visit to the Harry S. Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning the Peacocks got on the board first with a trio of runs in the second inning. With a leadoff triple and one out, SPU had back-to-back hits to bring in a pair of runs before a single later in the inning brought in the third run.Â
- The Peacocks added a fourth run in the top of the fourth.
- UMES would break up the perfect game in the bottom of the fourth with a lead off walk by Jaycee Holt. Nola Mountain would break up the no-hitter next on a single to the shortstop that put runners on first and second before SPU got out of the jam.
- McKenzie Abiley led off the bottom of the first with a single to left before a field error allowed her to reach third. With runners on the corner, Neveah Terrell stole second. On the attempted throw down, Abiley was able to cross the plate to get the Hawks on the board before a double play ended the inning.
- The Peacocks would add one more run in the top of the seventh as they closed out Game 1 with the 5-1 win over the Hawks.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Hawks collect three hits in the loss while striking out just three times.Â
- Ameenah Ballenger took the loss with 11 runs including five earned. She also struck out five on the day.
GAME 2
The Short Story:Â It was a hitfest for both team in the second game of the doubleheader as the Peacocks got the sweep with an 11-7 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Peacocks got on the board first again with on a bases loaded walk before pitcher Kylee Lehman was able to get out of the jam.Â
- In the second, the Hawks tied the game up when Holt scored on an RBI groundout to second by Mountain. Â
- SPU added a pair of runs on a Hawk error and single to right to take a 3-1 lead. A Morea Hodge single in the bottom of the inning scored Shanya Roberts from third to cut the lead down to one.
- The third inning was the only inning were neither team was able to cross the plate before both added runs in the fourth. The Peacocks added single run before an Abiley double to left center scored both Mountain and Holt to tie the game up at 4-4.
- Four SPU runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth would allow the visitors to take a 10-4 lead before a Ballenger double to left, with two outs, would score all three base runners and cut the deficit down to just three going into the seventh. Â
- The Peacocks got one of the runs back in the top of the seventh and held on for the 11-7 win to sweep the double header.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The two teams combined for 26 hits with the Hawks collecting 14 to out pace the 12 of SPU.Â
- Lehman pitched a complete game with five walks and five strikeouts.Â
- Both Ballenger and Holt finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate.

- UMES is next in action on Friday, March 1 when it travels to Baton Rogue, La. for the March Mumbo.
- The Hawks will play a doubleheader against the host Southern Jaguars on Friday before a single against against Southern and another against NAIA opponent Louisiana Christian on Saturday, March 2.Â
