The Short Story:Â The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball wrapped up its road trip with a 67-51 MEAC win over South Carolina State. The victory runs the Hawks' current win streak to four, the longest since the end of the 2019-20 season.
Mahogany Lester led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs cut the UMES lead down to two on a jumper at the 5:00 minute mark of the first quarter. It was nearly three minutes before either team were able to add to the scoreboard. The team traded points over the final 37 seconds of the quarter as the score would be tied at 12-12 after the first 10 minutes.
- The Hawks slowly built up their lead to 10 through the first five minutes of the second quarter, 25-15. The lead would expand to 16 on a layup by Jála Bannerman at 2:08 and again on a Amira Ofunniyin free throw on 1:02. SCSUÂ would cut the lead down to 13, 37-24 as the teams headed to the break.
- A layup by Ariana Seawell at 7:00 of the third quarter put the Hawks' lead up to 21, and capped an 8-0 run by UMES to start the period. Free throws by Lester at 5:38 gave the Hawks their biggest lead at 22 before the Bulldogs slowly whittled the gap down to 15 with 37 seconds left. Chaniqwa Gilliam hit a three with 10 seconds left as UMES had an 18 point advantage going into the final 10 minutes.
- The fourth saw both teams not able to score on runs, but did see the Bulldogs outscore the Hawks for the first time in the game as UMES came away with the 67-51 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- In addition to Lester's 17, Mya Thomas reached double-figures for the second game in a row with 12 points.
- Lester was not the only one to grab eight rebounds as Ofunniyin also secured eight as part of the Hawks' 42 total boards.
- As a team, the Hawks led in points of turnovers (23-18), second chance points (18-8), and bench points (25-6).
- In addition to the current season's four-game win streak, the victory also extended the Hawks' win streak over the Bulldogs to five.
