SUMMARY
An eight run third inning by George Mason ended up costing the Hawks in Wednesday's 15-3 road loss.
THE SCORE
University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (0-12) - 3
George Mason University Patriots (9-7) - 15
HOW IT HAPPENED
George Mason managed one run in the first before the Hawks grabbed an early one-run lead with runs in the top of the second and third innings. The Patriots surged for eight runs in the third inning to take full control of the Wednesday afternoon contest and never looked back. Insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings compared to just one Hawk run in the fifth ballooned the GMU lead to 15-3. A
Ryan Howe double in the top of the seventh scored
Carter Rieben for the Hawks. Howe would later come around to score on a
Ulysses Luciano single for the final runs of the game for UMES as the Patriots cruised to the 15-5 result.
BY THE NUMBERS
Wednesday was the first action for UMES in seven days as this past weekend's series against Stonehill was postponed due to weather and field conditions.
Outfielder
Derrick Mayes II has now recorded at least one hit in nine of 11 games this season.
UMES first baseman
Derek Blackmore has hit an RBI in three straight games.
GMU scored its 15 runs on 13 hits. The Hawks used six pitchers in the ballgame.
COMMENTS FROM COACH DANNY ACOSTA
"Today's loss is similar to what we have been thus far this season. We were able to manufacture a few runs early and grab a lead before make some mistakes on the mound and defensively."
"I thought we showed some good fight in the late innings but we have to get better in every phase of the game."
"Our focus towards our next game on Friday. We will focus on playing a more mistake free game defensively and maintain a consistent focus throughout each inning."
UP NEXT
The Hawks are scheduled to host Norfolk State on Friday to begin a three-game NEC series in Salisbury, Maryland.
