The Short Story:Â
Jaycee Holt led off the top of the seventh with a single to left to break up a no-hitter by the George Washington University Colonials as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell in game one of a non-conference doubleheader in Washington, DC on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first, the Colonials took advantage of a pair of walks in the top of the second and would score the game's first run.
- It was three-up, three-down for both teams until the bottom of the fifth. GWU used a triple to right center to add another run to the board, taking a 2-0 lead over UMES.
- Holt broke up the Cece Smith no-hit attempt in the top of the seventh, but the Hawks were unable to bring her around as the Colonials held on for the 2-0 shutout win.

The Short Story:Â The Hawks were not about to get just one hit again as UMES collected eight in game two, but dropped a heartbreaker to the Colonials in game two, 6-5Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMES would get on the board first in the top of the first when Nola Mountain scored off an error by the Colonial right fielder as the Hawks took the 1-0 lead. GWU answered with their own unearned, error scored run in the bottom of the frame to tie the score up at 1-1.
- The Colonials would take the lead in the bottom of the third off a two-out single to right. In the bottom of the fourth, they added an insurance run on a hit ball to first base with the bases loaded.
- The top of the fifth saw the Hawks load the bases on a walk by Morea Hodge and singles by Holt and Mountain. With two outs, Ballenger doubled to left center scoring both Holt and Hodge, tying the score at 3-3.
- GWU answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, using a double and single to push the runs across the plate.Â
- Not to be outdone, UMES responded in the top of the sixth with a walk by both McKenzie Abiley and Hodge. Holt then stepped up and doubled down the left field line scoring both base runners and tying the game up at 5-5.
- After a scoreless sixth and top of the seventh, GWU got the walk-off win with a lead off home run to left center, securing the win 6-5.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Mountain went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Hawks. She also scored a run.
- Holt and Ballenger were not far behind, both going 2-for-4. Ballenger had three RBIs with Holt adding two.
- Mountain, Ballenger and Abiley all tallied a stolen base for the Hawks.
- Kylee Lehman pitched a complete game with one strikeout.Â
UP NEXT
- The Hawks return home this weekend when the begin MEAC play, welcoming Coppin State to the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury.
- The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16 beginning at 1 p.m. They will then return to the field on Sunday, March 17 for a single game at 12 p.m.Â
