HOW IT HAPPENED

Ulysses Luciano and Ryan Davis put the Hawks up 2-0 with solo home runs in the second inning. NSU's Jamal Ritter hit a home run in the the third and Justin Journette evened the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning with an RBI single. The teams remained knotted until the 11th inning when NSU loaded the bases and took the lead on a Rapheal Rodriguez single. NSU added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly by Swaroop Pujari. UMES had one runner reach base in the bottom of the 11th but could not generate any offense in the eventual loss.



BY THE NUMBERS

UMES batters Derrick Mayes II, Doyle McNew and Ryan Davis each recorded two hits.

Mayes II was 90 feet away from scoring the winning run in the bottom of the  10th inning before being left stranded.

Davis and Ulysses Luciano recorded their first home runs of the season.

Brandon Poole went five innings while giving up two runs and four strikeouts in his first start of the year.

Despite taking the loss, Joe Kelly pitched five innings of relief while surrendering two runs.

John Horton was impressive on the mound for the Spartans with eight innings pitched while giving up two runs.
