Cade Williams getting his first start of the season for the Hawks, the Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead highlighted by the play of outfielder
Derrick Mayes II. Mayes threw a runner out at the bottom of the second inning and followed it up with a grand slam in the top of the third inning to give UMES the three run lead. GWU responded with solo home runs by a duo of freshman as Robbie Lavey drove the ball over the right field fence in the fourth inning and
Nick Mullen went to left center field in the fifth inning to trim the Hawk lead to one run. The Revolutionaries' scoring continued in the fifth inning as they tacked on two more runs on a Brett Young single and a Alexander Wright double. Up 5-4, GWU extended the lead in the sixth inning with two more run to go up by three runs. The Hawks scored in the eighth inning as a sacrifice fly by
Derek Blackmore scored Mayes from third base.Â
With the margin at two, GWU added insurance runs as Young hit an RBI double and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. UMES was unable to generate any offense in the ninth as the Revolutionaries celebrated their seventh straight victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
UMES outfielder Mayes II continues to be the top two-way performer for the Hawks this season. His grand slam in the third inning was his second home run of the season. Mayes has recorded at least one hit in eight of 10 games this year and is hitting .367. Mayes continued to flash the glove on Tuesday with a sprawling catch against the wall and throwing out a runner at third base.
In his first start this year, Williams went 4.2 innings and gave up five runs.
In addition to Mayes, the Hawks recorded two other extra base hits as
Riley Horner and
Ulysses Luciano each hit for doubles.

NEXT UP
With Wednesday's scheduled contest against Mount St. Mary's postponed due to heavy rains, the Hawks will play on Friday against Stonehill College in the first of three games. The series will be played at the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland.
