Big Third Quarter Pushes Hawks Past DSU on Senior Night

The Short Story:  On the night that the University of Maryland Eastern Shore recognized its two seniors, Cache Wilson and Mya Thomas, the Hawks used a big third quarter push to pull away from Delaware State in the the regular season finale at the Hytche Center, 73-63

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Hawks scored the first six points of the game, capped by a layup by Zamara Haynes at 7:17, the Hornets responded with 7-0 run over the next two minutes to take a one point lead. Not to be outdone UMES answered with their own 7-0 run in less than two minutes to put their lead back up to six at 3:47. DSU hit a thee with 1:52 left in the period to cut the lead down to 15-12. Those would be the final points of the period as neither team could score before the second quarter.
  • The Hornets would take charge in the second quarter leading by as many as three on multiple occasions as the teams battle back and forth with Ariana Seawell hitting a jumper with six seconds left in the first half to give the Hawks the two-point lead at the break.
  • Hot shooting for the Hawks in the third saw their lead grow throughout the period, leading by as many as 16 on a Thomas three at 1:34. Back-to-back three's by DSU cut the lead down to 10 by the end of the quarter.
  • For most of the fourth, the teams played even before UMES saw their lead get back to 16 with just under four minutes left; and again with 2:17. The Hornets would once again score the final six points of the quarter, but not more as the Hawks secured the 73-63 win on senior night. 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Thomas poured in 17 points, going 3-for-5 from beyond arc, and 7-for-10 overall on the floor.
  • Zaynes led the Hawks with team-high 21 points and seven rebounds. She went a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. 
  • As a team the Hawks made 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. 
  • UMES made the most of the DSU turnovers, outscoring the Hornets 30-10 off turnovers.

  • The Hawks will travel to Norfolk next week March 12-16 for the 2024 MEAC Basketball Tournament. With other games and seeding to be determined, game date and time is unknown as time of this release.
