THE GAME FACTS
Score:
 CSU 13, UMES 6
Location: Norfolk, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It did not take long for the the Hawks to get on the scoreboard in their first game of the tournament. With one out, Nola Mountain singled to the shortstop. The very next batter, Kelsie Ekstrom, hit her second home run of the season to near straight away center field that scored Mountain, putting UMES ahead 2-0.
  • The Eagles immediately answered with a two-run home run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the score up at 2-2. CSU would then use a pair of hits in the bottom of the second to score two more runs to take their first lead of the game 4-2.
  • This time it was the Hawks who answered in the top of the third. Jaycee Holt led off with a single to left before a single up the middle by Mountain pushed her to third. However a throwing error by the Eagles got by the third baseman and went into the CSU dugout that allowed Holt to take home and Mountain to third. Ekstrom followed up with her third RBI when Mountain was able to score on a groundout to first that tied the score up at 4-4.
  • Coppin State used a double in the bottom of the fourth and a sacrifice fly to retake the lead, 5-4.
  • Once again UMES answered in the next half inning. Holt and Mountain led off with singles in the top of the fifth. A deep single to right by Ameenah Ballenger on the next at bat scored both runners, giving the Hawks the 6-5 lead.
  • However, CSU responded in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs on seven hits to retake the lead for good 12-6. The Eagles would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth to provide for the final score, 13-6.
