Fast Start Pushes Hawks Past Delaware State

SUMMARY

In a record-setting day for one of the Hawks' longest tenured players, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore earned its second win of MEAC play with a 66-46 victory against Delaware State at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Brianna Barnes found the basket 12 seconds in and from there the Hawks refused to relent from that point on as UMES scored nine unanswered points to open the game against the Hornets. Barnes knocked down five of her 14 points of the game in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game while Dakieran Turner added another four early quarter points. For the quarter, UMES outscored Delaware State 23-6 while shooting 41.2% from the field. The Hawks also went perfect from the free throw line, going nine-of-nine.

With a 23-6 lead entering the second quarter, the Hawks continued to provide pressure on the Hornets with another seven unanswered points to begin the frame. Kiarra Kennedy kicked off the scoring spree by completing an and-one opportunity before Lainey Allen and Zamara Haynes drained shots to complete the seven-point swing. For the quarter, both sides saw an even point differential with 11 each. While UMES held Delaware State to just 3-of-15 from the field, the Hornets were able to knock down five of their six free throw attempts to bring the score level for the second.

The Hawks entered the second half with a 34-17 lead and put in an efficient scoring effort as they shot 50% from the field to buoy their lead, outscoring UMES 18-17 in the third. At the 8:24 mark Zamara Haynes hit a corner three to put the Hawks up 36-19, and with the bucket she also hit the 1,000-point mark for her career at UMES. The Hawks continued to pull an even-keeled quarter with Ce'nara Skanes, Aleah James, Ashanti Lynch, Haynes and Barnes each finding the basket for at least one score.

The final quarter of action played out much the same for both sides as UMES maintained its lead by taking a 14-12 advantage over Delaware State in the frame. Mahogany Lester helped lock down the Hawks' lead with seven of her 11 points, including a deep three four minutes into the quarter. 

BY THE NUMBERS

Zamara Haynes scored 17 points en route to eclipsing 1,000 points for her career. She also added five rebounds, two assists and a block to her milestone breaking night.

As a team, UMES went perfect from the free throw line for the game as they went 11-of-11, including nine-of-nine in the first quarter.

The Hawks took control of the paint through a 52-30 rebound advantage while scoring 36 points in the paint to the Hornets' 22. UMES' 52 rebounds marked the third time this season the team has eclipsed 50 in a game.

UMES shot right at its average percentage for the season, going 26-of-69 for a 37.7% average. For the season, UMES has shot 37.6%.

Brianna Barnes and Mahogany Lester each hit double digits scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Barnes added five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Lester added three rebounds, two steals and an assist to her total.

Dakieran Turner and Ashanti Lynch paced the team with six rebounds apiece while Lesley Thomas, Haynes, James and Barnes each pulled down another five each.

The Hawks go on the road for their next game at Morgan State on Saturday, Feb. 1. The team's next home game will be Monday, Feb. 3, against Coppin State.
