How It Happened
In the opening set, Morgan State closed the frame by scoring 15 of the final 16 points en route to a decisive victory in set one. Although the Hawks, aided by kills from Nkemjika Ikemefuna and Karielys Melendez, built a 7-1 lead in set two, the Bears outscored the Maroon and Grey 24-13 the rest of the way to take a two-set advantage.
UMES played their best set of the day in the third frame, beginning the set with an 11-6 advantage. Five different Hawks registered at least one kill in the early scoring surge. Even though Morgan State closed the gap to a single point, UMES ballooned their lead again with a 6-1 run sparked by a kill and service ace by Jayda Hutchins. The Hawks later finished the set with one final kill by Ikemefuna to win set three, 25-21.
In a back-and-forth fourth set, the Hawks led 20-18 until the Bears generated a 5-0 run to put the match out of reach. Despite the Hawks decreasing the deficit to 24-23, Morgan State clinched the win on one final kill to earn a four-set victory.
