Hawks earn dominant Homecoming win against Cheyney

Kaliya Perry drops first career double-double

SUMMARY 

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (1-1) took care of its game against Cheyney (1-1) early in a lopsided 91-37 win. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead with a 26-7 lead after the first quarter and never relinquished the lead as they held the scoring advantage every quarter of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Through the first quarter, the Hawks took a 26-7 lead behind an 11-of-19 performance from the floor, hitting 57.9% of their shots. Cheyney's only lead of the game came in on the opening basket of the game, and it lasted for 44 seconds before Kalise Hill tied it and Dakieran Turner laid in a shot less than a minute later to take the lead for UMES. 

Brianna Barnes connected on a shot and collected a pair of free throws while Turner and Hill also scored four points in the first frame. Jaida Cameron led the Hawks with five, including a dagger from beyond the arc, while Jailynn Clayton added a pair of points while Ashanti scored three and Kaliya Perry four. UMES led by as much as 23 points in the first quarter. 

The second quarter saw a closer contest as the Hawks maintained a 14-10 scoring advantage while shooting 6-of-18 from the court. Though UMES did not have the same offensive output as the first, the team controlled the paint and the boards with a 12 to seven rebound advantage. Hill chipped in another four points while Perry continued to pour on points with five more. Cameron added another couple of points while Candela Sabater Sánchez added a bucket and free throw as the Hawks held a 40-17 lead heading into halftime. 

UMES continued its run of offensive excellence in the third as it held a 19-10 scoring advantage while shooting 37.5% from the floor. Lainey Allen got the quarter started off with a quick bucket and stayed hot, adding seven points in the quarter. Barnes added another pair of free throws while Perry notched four, Jailynn Claton five and Cameron one. The Hawks also continued to put pressure on the boards with a 20-5 rebound advantage. 

In the final frame the Hawks put on a show with a 32-10 scoring advantage while shooting 60.9% from the field. Perry continued her hot night, capping a double-double with her final two points to begin the quarter. Clayton, Turner, Cameron, Lynch, Allen and. Sánchez each found their way to the basket to cap the Hawks' win. Desi Taylor led the Hawks in the quarter, though, with all 11 of her points coming on a triplet of threes and a layup. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

Freshman Kaliya Perry recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. She hit 7-of-9 shots (77.8%) while adding a pair of blocks and steals. 

Lainey Allen came just shy of a double-double herself as she dropped 11 points on the Wolves while pulling down eight rebounds. She added a trio of blocks and assists, as well. 

Desi Taylor got all her scoring done in the fourth quarter with 11 points. She went 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. 

The Hawks led for 37:44 of the game while Cheyney held the lead for only 41 seconds to begin the game. 

UMES held a 22-rebound advantage as the Hawks corralled 53 dunks to Cheyney's 31. 

As a team, the Hawks went 37-of-76 on shot attempts, hitting 48.7% of their shots. 

The Hawks took advantage of their 22 steals with 35 points coming off turnovers.
