PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (10-16, 7-6) defeated the Morgan State Bears (11-12, 8-5) in four sets at Hytche Arena.

How It Happened
In the opening set, the Hawks began the frame by pulling ahead to a 9-6 lead behind a pair of kills from Lilliana Montes. The Bears fought back to tie the match 20-20 before scoring five of the final eight points to win the opening set.
The Hawks responded in a huge way by winning the next three sets. UMES, powered by seven kills from Anjola Omolewa, built a five-point cushion, 16-11. Although Morgan State erased the deficit to tie the match at 19, the Maroon and Grey finished the set strong. The Hawks, highlighted by three kills by Karielys Melendez, closed the set on a 6-2 run to even up the match.
In the third set, UMES sped to a 10-6 lead behind kills from Omolewa, Nkemjika Ikemefuna, Kate-Linh Eden, and Montes. Morgan State rallied to tie the match, 13-13, before Maryland Eastern Shore generated an 8-1 scoring run. Malaysia Shaw provided a spark off the bench, recording two kills during the scoring surge. With the Hawks up by seven, the Bears roared back to even the match at 24. The Hawks stifled Morgan State's momentum just in time, closing a third-set victory on a kill by Nkemjika Ikemefuna and a Bears attack error.
The back-and-forth nature of the match continued into set four. Although Morgan State established a 16-10 advantage, UMES quickly usurped the lead with a 7-0 scoring run. Later in the set, tied 20-20, UMES scored five of the final six points, icing the victory with back-to-back service aces by Jayda Hutchins.

Anjola Omolewa paced the Hawks with a team-high 14 kills on a .345 attack percentage. She also led the Hawks with four blocks.

Karielys Melendez (12 kills) and Nkemjika Ikemefuna (11 kills) each recorded double-digit kills in the victory

Jayda Hutchins led the Hawks in digs with 11. She also added eight kills and tied for the team-lead in blocks

Kate-Linh Eden recorded a season-high 43 digs. She amassed 78 assists this weekend.
