Hawks fall to FDU at FDU Christmas Classic

SUMMARY 

HACKENSACK, New Jersy — A slow start offensively provided enough of a gap for FDU that the University of Maryland Eastern Shore could not catch up on a cold night shooting through the first half. The Hawks lost 85-57to the Knights in the final non-conference matchup for UMES this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

The Hawks were held without a made field goal through the first quarter against the Knights. The six points UMES scored came courtesy of free throws with Brianna Barnes knocked down 4-of-4 and Jailynn Clayton hitting another two. FDU hit an early couple of baskets, but neither side managed a scored for nearly three minutes after a three-point basket at the 8:45 mark. Barnes' first points came at 4:32 to cut the lead down to 8-2 before she drew another foul a minute later to add her next two. The Hawks trailed 18-6 after the first quarter. 

Through the second, the offensive efforts for UMES came up short as the Hawks were held without any points until the 3:53 mark when Dayshawna Carter made the first basket from the field for UMES. Enola Papin added another with two minutes remaining as the Hawks trailed 44-10 at halftime. 

The third quarter was more evenly balanced for UMES as the team scored 21 to FDU's 22. UMES opened the second half on an 8-3 run through the first 3:28 before each team traded shots the remainder of the quarter. Barnes continued her strong night shooting with eight points in the quarter while Kaliya Perry knocked in six while Carter added four, Ashanti Lynch two and Candela Sabater Sánchez one. 

Down 66-31 entering the final quarter, UMES found some offensive rhythm while the Hawks outscored FDU 26-19 in the last frame. Barnes finished her night with another eight points while Lynch, Sánchez, Desi Taylor and Jaida Cameron each drained a three as the Hawks went 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the floor in the final quarter. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

UMES shot 33.9% (20-of-59) for the game to FDU's 57.4% (31-54). Through the first half, though, the Hawks were held to 7.1 % (2-28) before going for 58.1 %(18-31) in the second. 

Brianna Barnes earned all FDU Christmas Classic tournament honors on the heels of a 20-point performance against FDU. She also added three rebounds, two assists and a steal in the game. 

Kaliya Perry and Dayshawna Carter each added eight points in the game while Perry added nine rebounds, two blocks and a steal while Carter also pulled down a rebound. 

UMES got to the free throw line for 14 attempts and knocked 13. The Hawks' 92.9% performance at the charity stripe was the most efficient game of the year for the team. 

Both teams saw a large portion of their offense pumped through players coming off the bench with the Hawks' bench accounting for 32 points and FDU's 35. 

FDU held a rebounding advantage 34-29, however UMES scored 17 second chance points to the Knights' 13.
