Hawks Struggle Against Bears' Offensive Surge in Conference Home Opener

UMES faced a tough home conference opener against Morgan State, dropping both games as the Bears' offense surged early and often.

After falling 10-2 in Saturday's first matchup, the Hawks struggled to contain Morgan State's bats again in game two, suffering a 17-0 defeat. Defensive miscues and timely hitting allowed Morgan State to take control early in both contests, while UMES was limited to a combined five hits across the two games.

Maryland Eastern Shore (2-21, MEAC 1-4) - 0

How it Happened
Game one
UMES hung tough early before Morgan State pulled away with a decisive sixth-inning rally in Saturday's 10-2 defeat.

The Bears pounced immediately, capitalizing on Hawks miscues for a 3-0 first-inning advantage and stretching it to 4-0 in the second on an RBI single.

The Hawks clawed back in the second when senior Mckenzie Abiley's RBI single brought home junior Ella Falcetti, who had reached on a single. Freshman Clarke Calvin displayed crafty baserunning in the third, walking before eventually stealing home to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The score remained tight until the sixth, when Morgan State erupted. The Bears loaded the bases through a combination of walks and errors before unleashing a barrage of timely hits, including a two-run single that broke the game open en route to a six-run inning.

Despite turning a double play in the fourth to keep the game close, UMES couldn't overcome Morgan State's offensive onslaught. The Hawks finished with four hits, led by Falcetti and Abiley's contributions in the losing effort.

Game two

Morgan State unleashed an offensive onslaught from the first pitch, dominating UMES in a 17-0 rout on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears' offense sparked early with a five-run first inning, exploiting a pair of Hawks errors while delivering clutch hits. A two-run single to center field opened the scoring before additional RBI singles pushed the lead to 5-0.

UMES threatened briefly in the bottom of the first, advancing a runner to scoring position following an error and stolen base, but a flyout to right field extinguished the opportunity.

The second inning proved catastrophic for the Hawks as Morgan State exploded for eight runs on six hits. The Bears' power surge included a three-run homer to left field and a devastating grand slam that ballooned the advantage to 13-0.

Any hopes of a Hawks comeback were further dimmed in the fourth when Morgan State added four more runs via timely RBI singles following a pair of walks, extending their lead to 17-0. Though UMES turned a double play to limit the damage, their offense remained silent throughout.

The Hawks mustered just two hits against Morgan State's dominant pitching, which recorded five strikeouts and allowed only one runner to advance beyond second base. UMES' final chance to prevent the shutout came in the fifth when sophomore Kamille Trammell delivered a pinch-hit double to reach scoring position, but a game-ending strikeout sealed the shutout defeat.
