UMES Battles to the Final Out but Fall in Doubleheader to South Carolina State

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore battled until the final out in both ends of Friday's doubleheader, but a late offensive surge by South Carolina State in game one and timely hits in game two lifted the Bulldogs to a sweep at Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex.

The Score

Game One
South Carolina State (11-18, MEAC 7-9) - 10
Maryland Eastern Shore (4-31, MEAC 2-12) - 6

Game Two
South Carolina State (12-18, MEAC 8-9) - 5
Maryland Eastern Shore (5-31, MEAC 2-12) - 2

How it Happened
Game one
A six-run seventh inning proved to be the difference on Friday afternoon as Maryland Eastern Shore dropped a 10-6 decision to South Carolina State at Henry S. Parker Athletic Conference.

The Hawks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bulldogs had already done the damage—breaking a 3-3 tie with a six-hit, six-run top half to take control late.

UMES fought from behind early after South Carolina State struck for back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the first. UMES responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half, as freshman Araceli Manzo knocked an RBI single and senior McKenzie Abiley added a run-scoring groundout to even the score.

Abiley drove in another run in the third with a sacrifice fly to give UMES its only lead of the afternoon, 3-2. But the Bulldogs tied it up in the sixth and pulled away an inning later. A leadoff triple followed by an RBI single sparked the rally, which included another triple and a three-run homer.

UMES mounted one final push in the bottom of the seventh. After a hit-by-pitch and a single, freshman Clarke Calvin drove a two-run triple into the gap, then scored on a single by freshman Lola Meyer. That brought the tying run to the plate, but the rally ended with a strikeout.

Junior Paige Perkins went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Meyer reached base three times and tallied an RBI. Manzo, Abiley, and Calvin each drove in runs, and the Hawks matched the Bulldogs in hits through the first six innings before the late-game burst.

Game two

UMES struck early but couldn't hold on, falling 5-2 to South Carolina State in game two of Friday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Hawks jumped ahead in the opening inning. Junior Jaycee Holt led things off with a single, and after a pair of hits and a Bulldog miscue, Manzo delivered an RBI single to bring Holt home and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks tacked on another run in the third. Calvin was hit by a pitch and scored later in the frame when Manzo singled and advanced on an outfield error, pushing the lead to 2-0.

South Carolina State responded in the fourth. The Bulldogs cut the lead in half with an RBI double, then tied the game on a two-out error. One inning later, they pulled ahead for good, using another RBI double to take a 3-2 advantage.

UMES had chances in the middle innings but left two runners stranded in both the third and fifth frames. The Bulldogs added insurance in the seventh on a two-run homer to make it 5-2.

Sophomore Paris Richards got the start in the circle for the Hawks, throwing four innings and allowing one earned run on three hits. Freshman Kassidy Oneail pitched three innings in relief, giving up one earned run and striking out two.
