How It Happened
2024 NIVC tournament participant East Carolina began the match on an 11-4 run. Highlighted by back-to-back service aces from Jayda Hutchins and a pair of kills from Rayah Howell, UMES scored six of the next seven points. The Pirates then tallied a 13-5 run to clinch a 25-15 victory in the opening set.
In the second set, East Carolina scored 18 of the first 25 points to take an 11-point lead in set two. The Hawks then put together a 4-1 scoring run behind kills from Hutchins and Lilliana Montes. ECU ultimately won set two 25-14, scoring the final three points in the set.
In the third set, the Maroon and Grey generated some momentum in the middle of the frame. Aces from Karielys Melendez and Anjola Omolewa and kills from Nkemjika Ikemefuna, Melendez, and Montes helped the Hawks go on a 6-2 run to tie the match at 11-11. East Carolina controlled the rest of set three, defeating UMES 25-16 for their second sweep of the Hampton Tournament.
