Hawks bounce back with final round of 305; Marchioni paces UMES with top 15 finish


WILMINGTON, Delaware - A tournament of ups and downs ended on a high note the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's golf team while playing in the University of Delaware Blue Hen Invitational.


Competing at White Clay Creek Country Club, UMES opened with a solid team score of 306 paced by the play of freshman Andreas Roman and senior Pedro Marchioni who both recorded rounds of 75 in the first 18 holes. Sophomore Max Osten finished with a 77 and Jeter Teng totaled a 79 to round out the top four scores for the Hawks who climbed up to as high as fourth place in the team standings.


The afternoon round proved to be a struggle for UMES as the team managed a score of 323 and dropped down to tenth place. Marchioni was a bright spot in the Hawk lineup with a 76 while freshman Emil Liddell, who was competing in individual play, carded consecutive rounds of 76 to climb up to within the top fifteen on the leaderboard. Roman recorded a second round score of 80. Teng finished with an 82 and Osten had an 85.


Tuesday's rainy morning round proved to be a bounce back day for the Hawks. Roman led the third round scoring for UMES with an impressive 73 highlighted by holing out a 102 yard shot on the 18th hole for eagle. The steady Marchioni finished in a tie for sixteenth place in the individual standings with a final round of 75 and led UMES for the week with a three-round total of 226. Osten played his best round of the tournament with a 75 while freshman Marcos Ramirez contributed to the team scoring with a final round of 82. Liddell finished a solid week in individual play with a final round of 80.


The team's final round score of 305 helped UMES climb up to a tie for ninth place in the final standings.


The Hawks will continue fall competition at the East Carolina University Ironwood Classic in Greenboro, North Carolina on Sept. 29.
