How It Happened
Charlotte opened the match by scoring 14 out of the first 21 points. Trailing 14-7, UMES responded with a 3-0 run featuring a kill from Karielys Melendez. The 49ers answered with a 6-2 scoring surge to pull away for good, winning the first frame 25-19.
In the second set, the Hawks, fueled by three kills from Nkemjika Ikemefuna, built a 10-7 lead. Although the Hawks sustained the three point advantage into the latter stages of the set, a late 8-3 scoring surge by Charlotte enabled the 49ers to win set two, 26-24.
UMES and Charlotte split the first 20 points of set three before the 49ers tallied another 8-3 run to generate an insurmountable lead. Despite the Hawks scoring three of the final five points, the 49ers held on to win the final set 25-19.
