Hutchins Earns Second Consecutive MEAC Rookie of the Week Award

NORFOLK, Va. – University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman setter Jayda Hutchins earned her second consecutive MEAC Rookie of the Week award from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Monday, Sept. 22. 

In three matches at the Charlotte Invitational, Hutchins recorded 82 assists (7.45/set), 10 kills, five service aces, and 14 digs.

Hutchins marked her fifth-straight match with 20 or more assists by posting a team-high 34 assists with six kills, three aces, and three digs in the victory over Ohio. Against Furman, Hutchins again paced UMES with 17 assists and also added three blocks. In her final game of the weekend, the freshman from Henderson, Nevada totaled 31 assists against Charlotte with seven digs and three kills to amass her fourth match of the season with 30 or more assists.

The honor marks Hutchins' second MEAC Rookie of the Week Award of the season. Libero Valeria Matias, who was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, and Hutchins became the first Hawks in the Vanessa Faircloth era to win weekly awards from the MEAC in the same week.
