BALTIMORE, Maryland – October 9, 2026 – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team fell to Coppin State in three sets (19-25, 14-25, 23-25) Friday evening at the Physical Education Complex.
Maryland Eastern Shore came out strong in the opening set, building an early 9-4 advantage. Coppin State responded and eventually pulled even at 16 before taking control late in the frame to earn a 25-19 victory.
Coppin carried that momentum into the second set, taking an early advantage before pulling away for a 25-14 win. The Eagles hit .464 in the frame with 18 kills.
The Hawks responded with their strongest offensive set of the night in the third, hitting .217 and battling Coppin throughout the frame. Eastern Shore held a 17-13 advantage before the Eagles rallied to tie the set at 19. The teams remained even at 20 before Coppin moved ahead late. UMES fought off match point to pull within 24-23 on a Shayla Henry kill, but the Eagles secured the final point for the 25-23 victory.
Jayda Hutchins led the Hawks offensively with seven kills, while Henry and Rayah Howell each added four. Malaysia Shaw contributed three kills and was a presence at the net, finishing with one solo block and four block assists.
Karielys Melendez led Eastern Shore defensively with a match-high 14 digs and added four assists. Arianna Warner Torres finished with seven digs and a team-high 10 assists. The Hawks recorded six total blocks as a team.
The loss moved Maryland Eastern Shore to 2-14 overall and 1-4 in MEAC play.
