Hawks Defeat Chargers 3-1, Complete Sweep

The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (6-2) defeated the Dominican University of New York Chargers (3-8) in four sets at Hytche Athletic Center.

How It Happened

In the opening frame, the Hawks, highlighted by two kills by Chase Valentine and one kill from Joshua Hightower, began the game by scoring four of the first five points. The visiting Chargers responded with a 13-5 scoring run to usurp control of the set. Although UMES tied the game, 18-18, Dominican proceeded to outscore UMES 7-4 the rest of the set, earning a 25-22 win in set one.

The Maroon and Grey flipped the match's momentum in set two. Tied 13-13, UMES sustained a 12-4 scoring surge behind kills from Tristan Rowley, Nikilas Blumenstock, Curtis Tom, Jaxon Clark, and Valentine to build an insurmountable lead. One final ace from Tom clinched a 25-17 victory for the Maroon and Grey to even the match.

The Hawks tallied their most dominant frame of the match in set three. UMES, spurred on by three kills from Hightower, built a 12-6 lead. The Hawks stayed consistent into the middle of the set, fortifying their lead with an 8-3 scoring surge. UMES only trailed once in the entire set en route to a 25-14 victory in set three.

UMES and Dominican were tied nine times in the first eleven points before the Hawks pulled away. With UMES leading 17-16, the Hawks, highlighted by kills from Clark, Tom, and Hightower, closed the set by scoring eight of the final ten points en route to a four-set victory.

The Numbers

  • Hightower and Rowley paced the Hawks with 15 kills. Rowley also added a team-high five aces

  • Valentine led the team in blocks with four

  • Tom paced UMES in assists with 29. Kenyon Haynes also added an additional 15 assists.

  • Jordan Brockman registered a team-high 10 digs in the victory.
