Gonzalez Perez named to Buster Posey Award Midseason Watch List

WICHITA, Kan. - Jonathan Gonzalez Perez has been named to the Buster Posey Award Midseason Watch List by the Wichita Sports Commission on the morning of Wednesday, April 1.

The Buster Posey Award, which is named after seven-time San Francisco Giants National League All-Star and three-time MLB World Series champion Buster Posey, is presented annually to the top collegiate catcher in NCAA Division I baseball. At the midway point of each season, the Wichita Sports Commission adds the top 50 catchers in the country to their watch list, and Gonzalez Perez was one of three HBCU catchers selected.

At the midway point of the 2026 UMES baseball season, Gonzalez Perez leads the team in batting average (.337), home runs (five), hits (29), RBI (25), total bases (49), slugging percentage (.570), sacrifice flies (five), doubles (five), and games started (24). The senior catcher from Syracuse, New York, also ranks top ten in the NEC in home runs, RBI, hits, and sacrifice flies.

Gonzalez Perez has also made a big impact in the community, volunteering at events with Greenwood Elementary School, Deal Island Elementary School, We Build You Play, and the Alzheimer's Association.

In addition to being added to the Buster Posey Award Watch List, Gonzalez Perez has also been selected to the 2025 HBCU Swingman Classic and is a three-time 2026 NEC Prime Performer.

Gonzalez Perez and the Hawks begin the second half of their season with a three-game series against FDU on Thursday, April 2.
