HAWK HALL OF FAME NOMINEES HIGHLIGHTS; PART TWO

Jan. 20, 2004

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has nominated thirty-two candidates for the 2004 Athletics Hall of Fame Induction, to be held during this year's Homecoming festivities the weekend of February 20th. As we draw nearer to the ceremony, we will continue to highlight several of these notable Hawks in this space. This article contains information about the following seven athletes:

James Lesane (Football- Baltimore, MD) who was a standout wide receiver for the Hawks in the late 1970's. Lesane, who also spent some time as a quarterback, compiled 99 career receptions for 1,450 yards and 15 touchdowns. These marks still rank him among the all-time MEAC receiving leaders today, 24 years after his career.

Alan Faulks (Basketball - Norfolk, VA) was a tenacious competitor in the court who earned the nickname "Mr. Clutch." He currently ranks 4th all-time in points in a season at UMES (537 pts in 1980). Faulks was a 2nd team All-MEAC Tournament performer in 1983 and a career 50% field goal shooter.

Jesse Williams (Basketball) was a four-year member of the Hawks basketball squad from 1958-1962, as was a CIAA all-tournament team selection in 1962. An outstanding rebouder, Williams averaged a double-double in the 1962 season at 13.8 points per game and 14.2 rebounds per contest. Dr. Williams now serves as the Chairman of the Board of Visitors at UMES.

Ian Dailey (Track - Bronx, NY) established a UMES school record in the 880-meter dash with a time of 1:53:30. Dailey was also a member of the Hawks' record-setting sprint and 4x4 400-meter relay teams. He was selected as a Track All-American in 1982.

Leslie "Shakey" Donaldson (Football) was a four-year letterman who served as the lead-blocker for Emerson Boozer on many of his runs. Donaldson, who also ran back punts and kick-offs, also spent time as a defensive back. As a D-back, he played professionally for the Richmond Rebels, and also as a running back for the Richmond Raiders.

Frank Mowery (Basketball - Washington, DC) served as a three-year starter for the Hawks basketball squad from 1952-1955. Mowery was the captain of the 1954-55 team that also included Hall-of-Famers Sonny Lloyd, Jerome Ford and Franklin Carr. Mowery, who made the Deans List in six of his eight college semesters, also played baseball where he captained the 1954 CIAA championship team.

Gordon Harris (Football/Basketball - Appollo, PA) was a three-year letter-winner in football, basketball and baseball from 1950-54. In football, Harris started as a receiver and a punter/place kicker on teams that compiled a 30-2-1 record. In basketball, he started as a center on successful teams that included Hawk Hall-of-Famers Ron Logan, Ken McBride and Corky Locke. Harris, who passed away in 1996, also played outfield on the 1954 CIAA-champion baseball team.
