Shawn Phillips Headshot 2023

Shawn Phillips

Joining the University of Maryland Eastern Shore coaching staff in August 2021, Shawn Phillips worked alongside head coach Brian Hollamon as the programs pitching coaching and recruiting coordinator before taking over the program as the interim head coach in the Spring of 2023.

Pitching in Minor League Baseball and Frontier League after an illustrious college career, Phillips brings a wealth of knowledge to the pitching staff while also working to bolster the search for the next great Hawk student-athlete.

A native of Laurel, Delaware, Phillips graduated from Laurel High School in 2000 before attending Delaware State University where he graduated in 2007 with a bachelors in Sports Sciences after returning to his studies following his professional career.

While at Delaware State University, Phillips set several records that still hold today, including wins, complete games, strikeouts, and innings pitched. The 2002 MEAC Rookie of the Year and a 2004 First Team selection when he led the Hornets to the MEAC Championship game, Phillips’ name is cemented in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record books with the transition to the Northeast Conference in 2022. Phillips is locked in at top-10 in several MEAC all-time categories including career and single season ERA, career and season batters struck out, and career and single season wins with the conference putting baseball on pause. Phillips was also a Freshman All-American in 2002 and Black College Nines Pitcher of the Year in 2004.

Following his career at Delaware State, Phillips was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 20th Round of the Major League Baseball Draft, the 10th overall in school history. Beginning his season at Low-A Spokane, Phillips pitched 71 innings with a 3.93 ERA and 53 strikeouts to eight walks.

After missing 2005, Phillips played two years in the Frontier League where he had a 2.27 ERA over 154.2 innings before winding down his career at Greensboro in the MiLB.

Returning to Delaware after his playing days, Phillips immediately impacted lower-Delaware youth and high school sports with stints coaching baseball, softball, basketball and cross country at Delmar Middle/High School and his alma mater Laurel High School. In 2012, Phillips was named to the Delaware State University Athletic Hall of Fame for his career as a Hornet.

During his short time at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Phillips has already affected the Hawks quicker than could have ever been expected. During the 2022 campaign, Phillips saw his pitching staff lead the MEAC in ERA and walks allowed, while nationally the Hawks led Division 1 in complete games with two starters finishing 1-2 in the nation.

Currently Phillips resides in Laurel, Delaware with his wife Ashley, daughters Riley, Layla, and son Myles.
