Malikah Willis

Malikah Willis enters her third season as head coach of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball program in 2026–27 after being appointed to the position in April 2024.

Under Willis' leadership, the Hawks made history during the 2025–26 campaign, finishing with a 20–15 overall record and an 11–3 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. Maryland Eastern Shore established a new program record for single-season victories and earned its first postseason appearance in program history with a berth in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

The Hawks made the most of their historic opportunity, defeating Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent Wake Forest, 59–48, in the opening round of the WNIT on March 19, 2026. The victory marked the program's first postseason win and first victory over a power-conference opponent. UMES advanced to the second round before concluding its season against Youngstown State.

During the 2025–26 regular season, Maryland Eastern Shore earned the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Tournament, its highest conference tournament seeding since 2018–19. The Hawks also reached the MEAC semifinals for the second consecutive season under Willis.

Individual recognition followed the team's success, as Brianna Barnes earned MEAC Sixth Player of the Year honors, Ashanti Lynch received First Team All-MEAC and All-Defensive Team recognition, and freshmen Desi Taylor and Kaliya Perry were named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team.

Willis arrived at Maryland Eastern Shore with more than 23 years of collegiate coaching experience, having served at Kennesaw State (2022–24), Mississippi State (2021–22), Eastern Michigan (2020–21), Texas Tech (2019–20), College of Charleston (2017–19), Georgia Tech (2013–17), West Virginia (2009–13), Norfolk State (2007–09), Elizabeth City State (2004–07), Cheyney (2003–04), Chicago State (2002–03) and Illinois-Chicago (2001–02).

Before arriving at UMES, Willis spent two seasons at Kennesaw State, helping guide the Owls to several program milestones. During her tenure, Kennesaw State recorded its first 3–0 and 4–0 starts in Atlantic Sun Conference play and established a program-record six-game ASUN regular-season winning streak.

Willis also contributed to significant postseason success during her previous coaching stops. At Georgia Tech, she helped the Yellow Jackets reach the NCAA Tournament once and make three WNIT appearances, including a run to the championship game. During her four seasons at West Virginia, the Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA Tournament each year, highlighted by a school-record 29 victories during the 2009–10 season.
