Robert Furges has served as a Assistant Sports Information Coordinator at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore since June of 2024..
Furges comes to UMES after spending the 2023-24 season as a Communications Assistant with Duke University’s athletics department in Durham, North Carolina.
A Graduate of North Carolina Central University, with a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications and a concentration in broadcast media, Furges brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to UMES, serving with Duke athletics, WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina, and NCCU's athletic communications team.
As a Communications Assistant at Duke, Furges served as the primary communications liaison for the wrestling program, excelling in crafting comprehensive game notes, match
previews, and post-match recaps. His proficiency extends to operating and monitoring live statistics, ensuring accurate and timely reporting for all sports events. In addition to his
responsibilities with wrestling, Furges played a pivotal role in supporting other sports programs. He assisted the men's basketball program with in-season media opportunities and facilitated
post-game press conferences, meticulously transcribing quotes and distributing statistics with precision.
Before joining Duke University Athletics, Furges honed his skills as a reporter at WRAL’s HighSchoolOT.com, showcasing exceptional writing prowess in crafting post-game recaps,
editing content, and compiling highlights. His experience also includes conducting post-game interviews and reporting on high school sports, highlighting his versatility and dedication to
sports journalism.
While working towards his bachelor's degree, Furges participated with the NCCU sports network and campus news station, assisting with broadcast duties for home events. After earning a
larger role with NCCU’s communications team, Furges began to give a hand with the Sports Information department, working with the school’s volleyball, football, and basketball programs.
Furges is a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Raleigh’s Leadership Triangle. Leadership Triangle aims to guide young scholars with their leadership
skills in the Raleigh-Durham area. Robert enjoys contributing to his community, volunteering at local food drives and elementary schools.
With a diverse background and a passion for sports communications, Furges looks forward to continuing his community contributions to the UMES area, embodying excellence and
professionalism in every endeavor.
