Box Score
Baltimore, MD - Coppin State College Senior Jimmy Boykin scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half and pulled down seven rebounds in his final game at the Coppin Center, leading Coppin State past UMES, 61-38, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up earlier this evening. Every Coppin State player attempted a shot and those who played more than three minutes scored at least one field goal.
The game was a mirror image of the contest between these two teams earlier this season, which the Eagles handily won 68-42 in Princess Anne. In that contest, the Eagles held UMES to just 34 percent shooting and just 17 percent from three point range.
Today was much of the same as Coppin came out scorching. Boykin, who was honored before the game for his three years of play at Coppin State, opened the game up by hitting his first three baskets, all from three-point range, to spark a 17-5 Coppin run over the first six minutes of the game. UMES would answer back with three straight points, punctuated by a Didier Socka dunk to cut the lead to single digits, 17-8. But a jumper by sophomore Kelvin Green would give the Eagles an 11-point lead, 19-8, and sparked another Coppin State run. A three-pointer by freshman West Otis closed out the 22-7 run, giving the Eagles a 37-15 lead at the break and taking the fight out of the Hawks.
The Eagles defense held UMES to just seven points over the final 10:42 of the first half as Coppin (15-13, 13-4 MEAC). Defensively, the Eagles held UMES to just five field goals on 26 percent shooting, and forced nine turnovers. Coppin, meanwhile, finished the first stanza shooting 48 percent, including 55 percent (6-of-11) from three point range.
The second half was much of the same as Green scored 11 points in the half, including two three-pointers. Darryl Jones' three-pointer with 3:45 remaining gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 59-28, and allowed Coppin State head coach Fang Mitchell to clear off his bench.
Coppin held UMES to 23 percent (9-of-33) shooting from the field and just 27 percent (3-of-13) from three-point range, while forcing eight turnovers.
The 38 points surrendered by Coppin ranks second in school history and are the fewest points allowed this season, breaking the mark of 39 points scored by Delaware State on homecoming (2/14).
Green finished the contest with a game-high 17 points, on 67 percent (6-of-9) shooting, and four rebounds. Otis added seven points off the bench, as the Eagles' subs outscored the UMES bench, 31-16.
Javes Wiggins had 11 points and eight rebounds to lead UMES, who was without leading scorer and three-time MEAC Player of the Week Tee Trotter. Aaron Wellington added eight points for the Hawks.
