PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team fell in their final contest of the Hawk Challenge Saturday afternoon, dropping their decision to the Wagner Seahawks 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-22).
UMES (3-15) threatened to tie the match at a game apiece when freshman Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn.) registered two consecutive kills to bring the Lady Hawks within three points of the lead in game two. However, Brandy Barnett brought Wagner back with two of her match-high 12 kills.
The Seahawks (3-8) had an eight point lead before senior Eriel Jeffery (Highland, Calif.) brought UMES back in the game as she added three of her eight kills in game two. But Trish Morris ended the game on a kill for Wagner, and the Seahawks went on to take the final game 30-22 to seal the victory.
Eller and Jeffery each had eight kills to lead the Lady Hawks. Barnett led Wagner with 11 kills.
In the third match of the Hawk Challenge, Manhattan defeated Delaware State (2-13) in five games (30-20, 28-30, 27-30, 30-21, 15-11). Leading the attack for the Jaspers was Megan O'Dorisio with a match-high 22 kills. Maggie Pfeifer added 20 kills for Manhattan while setter Lori Bambauer added 40 assists.
The Lady Hornets were led by Michael-Anne Gunsten and Laura Huckulak, both of whom added a team high 14 kills, while Kinga Muszynski finished with 10. Senior setter Dawn Alford gave Delaware State a match-high 41 assists to go along with 17 digs.
In today's other matches, Barnett knocked down 10 kills as Wagner took out Coppin St. in three games. Loriann Tunila added nine kills and Morris slipped in with eight. Brittany Arvin had 12 kills for the Lady Eagles and Jo Ellen Felton added eight. Kerry Krohn finished with a team high 14 assists.
The Jaspers (7-10) defeated Coppin St. in three games to close out the final contest of the Hawk Challenge. Ashley Watson led the way in the evening cap as she finished with 17 kills while Pfeifer and O'Dorisio each added 12. Arvin had a match high 19 kills to lead the Lady Eagles (2-14).
The Lady Hawks were represented on the all-tournament squad by Eller and Yael Rozner (Haifa, Israel). Bambauer (Manhattan), Tunila (Wagner) Arvin (Coppin St.), Huckulak (Delaware St.) and tournament MVP Pfeifer (Manhattan) rounded out the all-tournament honors.
