Oct. 15, 2005

Box Score

Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) opened the 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doing something they have never done before, playing live on National Television. The Hawks (4-18, 1-5 MEAC) took on the Rattlers of Florida A & M University (FAMU) (8-4, 4-0 MEAC) and fell to 3-0 (30-22, 30-11, 30-20) on "The U" ESPN's newest station dedicated to college athletics.

ESPNU carried that match at 3:00 p.m. as well as two other match-ups earlier in the day with Delaware State knocking off Bethune-Cookman 3-2 and North Carolina A&T knocking off Hampton by the same score.

For the Hawks, the jitters of not only playing on ESPNU showed, but also the stress of playing the conference's top team in FAMU, the defending MEAC champions who knocked off the Hawks last season in the MEAC Championship.

FAMU got a huge game from Adriana Kostadinova who tallied 18 kills. Right behind her was teammate Maria Andonovoa who had 17 kills. They each recorded five digs.

For the Hawks Maja Baltic led the way with six kills while Holiday Eller had five kills. Eller, Stephanie Braxton and Likica Grceva each recorded six digs.

The story of the match was hitting as FAMU hit a whopping .347 compared to the Hawks' .089.

"We played well for the most part," said Head Coach Alex Temkin. I was pleased with our effort in the first and third games but we certainly aren't happy with the result. We have to learn from this and put some wins on the board in the next two days."

UMES takes on South Carolina State tomorrow at 11:00 am and then plays North Carolina A & T State at 5:00 pm. tomorrow.
